The BMW X3 has always been about balance. Since its debut, it has blended everyday usability with the kind of driving engagement BMW is known for. Over the years, it has grown in size, tech and ambition, and with this all-new generation, BMW has pushed things even further. The X3 M50 xDrive now sits at the summit of the range, bringing M Performance credentials to the table.
Bold looks, bold opinions
Finished in Arctic Race Blue metallic and sitting on optional 21-inch Individual aerodynamic 910 I Bicolour wheels, the new X3 M50 xDrive makes an immediate statement. The design has moved on significantly from the previous generation, leaning into sharper lines, chunkier proportions and a more aggressive stance.
At the rear, quad exhaust tips underline its sporting intent. While they certainly look the part, their presence is likely to divide opinion. Quad pipes were once reserved for full M cars, so seeing them on an M-Lite model feels slightly controversial. Still, BMW clearly wants the M50 to look as fast as it is.
The overall design also hints at a more global styling direction, with influences that will resonate strongly in markets like China. Locally, this may split opinion. Some will appreciate the assertive, modern look, while others may miss the cleaner, more restrained design of the outgoing X3. Either way, it is not easily ignored.
A familiar but evolved cabin
Inside, the new X3 feels like a natural evolution of BMW’s latest interior language. It is familiar, but more modern and more digital. Dominating the dash is BMW’s Curved Display, combining a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with a 14.9-inch infotainment screen running Operating System 9. The setup is sharp, intuitive and visually impressive.

Sporty details include a red 12 o’clock steering wheel marker, while everyday comforts are well covered with wireless charging, a Harman Kardon sound system and 570 litres of boot space, which should easily handle a weekend getaway or daily family duties.
The minimalist approach does come at a cost. Physical climate controls have been removed, meaning most adjustments now live within the touchscreen. It works, but it does add a layer of distraction. BMW, if you are listening, buttons still have fans.
Material quality is largely premium, although a few harder plastics lower down remind you that even a new-generation BMW has cost considerations. Space, however, is excellent, with generous head and knee room in both rows.
Performance the M-Lite way
Powering the X3 M50 xDrive is BMW’s familiar 3.0-litre B58 inline-six turbocharged engine, producing 293 kW and 580 Nm, paired with an 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. BMW claims a 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 4.6 seconds, and from behind the wheel, that figure feels entirely realistic.
This is where the M-Lite positioning makes sense. In Sport mode, the exhaust offers the occasional pop and crackle, enough to add character without turning the drive into a constant soundtrack. It is quick, confident and refined, rather than raw or edgy like a full M car.
Ride quality strikes an impressive balance between comfort and control. The X3 M50 feels planted through corners yet remains comfortable enough for daily commuting and long-distance cruising.
During mixed driving, we recorded fuel consumption of 9.8 L/100km. It is not frugal, but given the performance on offer, it feels reasonable, even if BMW’s claimed 8.2 L/100km is on the optimistic side.

Final word
The all-new BMW X3 M50 xDrive is a convincing flagship for the range. It delivers strong performance, modern tech and everyday usability in a package that clearly differentiates itself from standard X3 models, without crossing into full M-car territory.
As an M-Lite SUV, it does its job very well. It is fast, comfortable, and unapologetically bold in its design. At R1,545,447, it is a serious investment, but one that rewards with a blend of performance and practicality that many buyers will find hard to ignore. Just do us one favour next time, BMW. Bring back a few physical buttons.

Sounds like a fantastic option for someone wanting serious performance without the massive M price tag! Really excited to see BMW continuing to innovate.
