The GWM Tank 300 has always made a strong first impression with its rugged looks and serious off-road intent. With the introduction of a diesel engine, it now feels better matched to the way many owners will actually use it. This new 2.4-litre turbodiesel variant aims to add efficiency and everyday usability without losing the Tank’s tough personality.
The engine produces 135 kW and 480 Nm of torque and is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. On paper, the numbers are sensible rather than showy, but out on the road they prove to be exactly what the Tank 300 needs.
Styling
Visually, the diesel model is identical to the petrol derivatives, and that is no bad thing. The boxy silhouette, muscular stance and aggressive front grille give the Tank 300 undeniable presence. The 18-inch alloy wheels and upright proportions reinforce its off-road credentials, while the overall design still feels modern rather than retro for the sake of it.
Interior
Inside, the Tank 300 Diesel continues to punch above its weight. The cabin feels premium, solidly built and well insulated, making it a comfortable place to spend long hours behind the wheel. Ultra Luxury trim brings full-grain Nappa leather seats, complete with heating, cooling and massage functions for the front occupants, which feels slightly indulgent in a vehicle that looks ready for mud and rocks.

Technology is well catered for with a 12.3-inch full-colour touchscreen infotainment system offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, paired with a 9-speaker Infinity sound system. The infotainment is user-friendly, and the presence of physical shortcut buttons makes navigating the system far less distracting while driving.
On the road
The diesel engine suits the Tank 300’s character well. Acceleration is respectable, with torque readily available when needed, whether pulling away from a stop or overtaking at highway speeds. It is a relaxed and smooth drivetrain rather than an urgent one, and that feels appropriate for this type of SUV.
Ride quality is comfortable and composed, absorbing imperfections with ease. GWM claims fuel consumption of 9.2 L/100km, and during our time with the vehicle we recorded 9.8 L/100km. That makes it more efficient than the hybrid version, which will matter to buyers planning longer trips or regular daily use.

Final word
When we handed back the keys to the GWM Tank 300 Diesel Ultra Luxury 4WD, it is clear that the addition of the diesel engine has strengthened the overall package. It retains the same bold styling and highly equipped cabin as the petrol models, but adds better real-world efficiency and a more relaxed driving experience.
Has the diesel engine made the Tank 300 more desirable? For us, it has. It feels like the most complete and sensible version of the Tank 300 range, and sometimes, sensible is exactly what you want. Pricing for the GWM Tank 300 2.4T Ultra Luxury 4WD starts at R739,900.
