Jaecoo J7 Inferno AWD: A strong first impression in a tough segment

Style, comfort, and value.
Style, comfort, and value.

The mid-size SUV space is one of the toughest segments around, and newcomers quickly learn that bold styling alone is not enough. The Jaecoo J7 Inferno arrives as the range-topping model with a strong visual presence, generous specification, and pricing that puts pressure on established rivals. The question is whether it delivers beyond the showroom floor.

Exterior

From the outset, the J7 Inferno makes a convincing case for itself. The design is modern and well resolved, with a bold grille, crisp LED lighting, and 19-inch alloy wheels that suit the vehicle’s proportions. It looks premium without leaning into gimmicks, and importantly, it doesn’t disappear in traffic. This is a design that feels deliberate rather than overstyled.

Interior

Inside, the focus is clearly on tech and presentation. The cabin is anchored by a large 14.8-inch touchscreen that controls most vehicle functions, paired with a digital instrument cluster. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 50W wireless charging, panoramic sunroof and leather upholstery come standard, putting the J7 Inferno firmly in line with expectations for this segment.

The infotainment system is intuitive and responsive, making daily use straightforward. Practicality is respectable, with 574 litres of boot space on offer, expanding to 1,335 litres with the rear seats folded. Rear visibility, however, is a weak point. The rear window is relatively small, and the rear-view mirror exaggerates proximity, making objects appear closer than they are.

Drive and performance

Power comes from a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 145 kW and 290 Nm, paired with a 7-speed DCT. Power is delivered through Jaecoo’s All-Road Drive Intelligent System, providing all-wheel drive capability.

On the move, the J7 Inferno prioritises comfort and composure. Acceleration is smooth rather than urgent, and the suspension is tuned to absorb road imperfections with ease. This is an SUV clearly set up for daily commuting and long-distance cruising rather than enthusiastic driving.

Fuel consumption is claimed at 7.8 L/100km. Over a week of mixed driving, we recorded an average of 8.6 L/100km, which remains reasonable for an all-wheel-drive SUV of this size.

Final word

The Jaecoo J7 Inferno is a well-rounded and convincing entry into a highly competitive segment. It offers strong design, a generous feature list, and competitive pricing starting at R679,900. While long-term durability will ultimately define its success, the J7 Inferno makes a solid case for itself as a comfortable, well-equipped, and sensibly positioned SUV.
