The Suzuki Grand Vitara has always played a slightly different game in the compact SUV segment. While rivals chase outright power figures and aggressive styling, the Grand Vitara focuses on efficiency, comfort and everyday usability. In 1.5 GLX 6AT Hybrid AllGrip form, it doubles down on that philosophy, offering light electrification, proper all-wheel drive and a surprisingly well-equipped package.
Styling
From the outside, the Grand Vitara strikes a clean and modern balance. It is not trying to look overly rugged, but it still has enough presence to avoid blending into traffic. Key exterior highlights include 17-inch machined alloy wheels, a tasteful two-tone paint finish, LED headlights and taillights, as well as LED daytime running lights.
The design feels sensible rather than shouty, which will appeal to buyers who want something contemporary without unnecessary drama. It is the kind of SUV that looks just as comfortable pulling up to a school gate as it does heading out of town for the weekend.
Interior and tech
Step inside and the Grand Vitara GLX punches above its weight. The cabin layout is clean and intuitive, with controls falling easily to hand. Material quality is good for the segment, and everything feels solidly assembled.
Its generously equipped, featuring a panoramic sunroof, a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, three USB ports, automatic climate control with rear air vents, a 360-degree camera system and a head-up display. That is a strong spec list by any measure.

Everyday convenience features include keyless entry, auto start-stop, folding mirrors and automatic headlights, all of which make living with the Grand Vitara genuinely easy. Space is well judged too, with ample room for passengers and a boot that will comfortably handle daily duties and weekend luggage.
On the road
Powering the Grand Vitara is Suzuki’s K15C 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with a mild hybrid system, delivering a combined output of 76 kW and 137 Nm. It is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, though you will rarely feel the need to use them.
On paper, those numbers will not excite anyone, and on the road, the Grand Vitara confirms that this is not an SUV built for urgency. Instead, it prioritises smoothness and efficiency.
That said, while the mild-hybrid setup delivers smooth and efficient progress, we could not help but wish for Suzuki’s 1.4-litre Boosterjet turbo-petrol engine. We have experienced it in other models, and its extra punch and stronger mid-range torque would suit the Grand Vitara’s character well, especially when overtaking or driving with a full load. The current powertrain is competent and easy-going, but the Boosterjet would add a welcome dose of urgency without compromising everyday usability.
Ride comfort is a highlight. The suspension does a good job of absorbing rough surfaces, making it well suited to South African roads. Steering is light and easy, ideal for urban driving, while the AllGrip system adds peace of mind on slippery roads or light gravel, rather than encouraging any serious off-road heroics.
Suzuki claims a combined fuel consumption figure of 5.6 L/100km, and while that number is achievable under ideal conditions, real-world driving tells a slightly different story. Over our time with the Grand Vitara, which included a mix of urban commuting, highway cruising and the occasional gravel detour, we averaged 7.0 L/100km.

Final word
The Suzuki Grand Vitara 1.5 GLX 6AT Hybrid AllGrip is not trying to be the fastest or the flashiest SUV in its class, and that is exactly why it works. It is comfortable, efficient, well equipped and easy to live with, offering a level of everyday refinement that will appeal to a broad audience.
At a starting price of R542,900.10, it represents solid value, especially when you consider the standard equipment and the added reassurance of all-wheel drive. The Grand Vitara may not shout for attention, but spend some time with it and you will realise it does not need to. Sometimes, quietly clever is more than enough.

That’s a really interesting take! It’s great to see a car prioritizing practicality and a smooth ride like this.
