We recently got to drive the stylish Mercedes-Benz A250.
Styling
The A-Class was launched back in 1997, which looked weird, it was tall with a short body. Fast forward 22 years later its the opposite now being lower and longer. It’s actually one of the best looking cars in its segment. It looks very smart from its narrow headlights to its pointy taillights. The stance of this car looks proper thanks to optional 19-inch wheels, sportier suspension setup that’s been lowered by 15 mm.
Inside
The interior of the A-Class is a classy affair, it’s a major step up from its rivals. The interior is very comfortable and spacious. It’s covered in high-quality materials, but the use of cheaper material is present. It also features Mercedes-Benz’s MBUX infotainment system with the iconic “Hey Mercedes” 😎. The steering is one of our favourite parts of the car. Feels excellent in the hand and the controls are easy to use. The flat bottom design looks beautiful.
The Drive
A250 is powered by a 2.0-litre engine producing 165kW and 350Nm of torque which is in line with VW Golf 7 GTi. It provides excellent performance. 0 – 100 km/h sprint comes in at 6.2 seconds. Power is sent through the front via a 7-Speed dual-clutch transmission. Don’t get is wrong, it looks great but lacks in the exhaust note department. When it comes to fuel economy the A250 is very good, drive carefully and you’ll be able to get under 7 L/100 KM. But drive a bit hurriedly and it will punish you.
Verdict
Out test model starts at R569 969 but was specced to around R644 000. We think this is a car for someone who wants to enter the Mercedes-Benz brand, then most likely climb through other models. It’s a well-rounded vehicle, provides excellent performance and has the best cabin in its segment.
