DRIVEN: Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+

A combination between sportiness and comfort.
A combination between sportiness and comfort.

Meet the Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 SUV. This model sits under the more potent GLE 63 variant. This means it packs a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged in-line six that produces 320kW and 520Nm of torque. Mercedes claims a 0 – 100 km/h sprint in 5.2 seconds. Power is sent to its 4 MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system via an AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission. Though rocking massive wheels, it drives beautiful thanks to its adaptive air suspension. Fitted with the optional AMG performance exhaust, it’ll give its more powerful sibling- the GLE 63 – a run for its money when it comes to exhaust notes.

In terms of looks, you can differentiate it from a normal GLE by its large grille with vertical slats, a front splitter, big wheels (our test unit was rocking massive optional 22-inch wheels) and quad exhaust pipes. It really is a stunning look piece of kit.

Inside the GLE 53 is premium and is quite a tech-fest as the driver is greeted by two massive 12.3-inch screens, with the touch screen supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also has navigation and the classic “Hey Mercedes” voice recognition. The materials used inside are of high quality. When it comes to practicality, it has plenty of head and legroom and also an option of a third row of seats making it a proper 7 seater.

The Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+ is a good prospect. It sits in between the GLB and GLS and when opting for the 7 seat configuration you’re getting the practicality of GLB, the stunning looks that it already possesses without having to break the bank and getting the GLS. Starting price for the GLE 53 starts from R1 851 280
