The new BMW 4 Series has to be one of the most disliked cars on the internet when it was first revealed, even from the concept phase it was not that well received. In a way, I feel like BMW has been conditioning us for the big grille either through production models and concepts. Here are a few examples: 1938 BMW 328, BMW 328 Hommage (concept car), BMW Concept Coupé Mille Miglia, and the 3.0 CSL Hommage R. Besides the grille debacle, I think it is a stunning coupe.

Let’s start with the design. Though it’s based on the 3 Series underpinnings, the 4 Series sets itself apart with a completely different front end, stylish rear lights and stunning coupe proportions. I got to drive the 420d and M440i which are the models that were available at launch. The 420d was fitted with the BMW’s M Sport package that adds sportier front and rear bumpers, M badges, and more stylish wheel options. The proportions of this car are stunning.

Inside its a rather classy affair. The Coupe shape adds a special kinda aura to it, though it looks the same as a 3 Series. The leather colour options in this car are brilliant as they suit the car so well. The infotainment system is driver-focused with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch Control Display that’s angled towards the driver. It features the latest version of Apple CarPlay and now supports Android Auto.

There are currently three engine options available: 420d, 420i, and M440i. I got to sample the 420d and M440i. The M440i is powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six that produces a healthy 275 kW and 500 Nm of torque. Power is sent to all-four-wheels via an eight-speed Steptronic transmission. The car handled beautifully thanks to its xDrive all-wheel-drive system and balanced chassis. To top it off is that beautiful exhaust note that accompanies its great driving dynamics. The 420d is powered by a 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine that produces 140 kW and 400 Nm of torque. It sends its power to the rear wheels via eight-speed Steptronic transmission. Down on power compared to the M440i, it handles pretty well nonetheless. The 420d is geared towards those that want great fuel economy and long drives.

The improved handling of the 4 Series is thanks to its 50:50 weight distribution, the optional M Sport suspension with a firmer set-up for dampers, mounts and anti-roll bars, plus additional body struts and variable sport steering. There’s also an option of adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers, M Sport brakes with a choice of blue or red brake calipers, M Sport differential with fully variable locking function in the rear differential.

As with a new model it has come with plenty of improvements. it now has less cabin noise, wider sunroof, new cloud-based BMW Maps navigation system, and BMW’s new-generation Head-Up Display which offers 70 per cent larger projection surface.

The 4 Series is a great package when looking for a Coupe in this segment. It has much-needed improvements and looks the part. Whether you love sporty driving or cruising, it is worth considering buying.
