
The Suzuki Fronx enters one of the most hotly contested segments on the market, the compact crossover space, where style often matters just as much as substance. After spending time behind the wheel of the range-topping Suzuki Fronx 1.5 GLX Auto, it is clear Suzuki is aiming squarely at buyers who want something compact, affordable and easy to live with, but who are not willing to settle for bland.
Styling
Visually, the Fronx is a strong effort. In fact, it might just be one of the best-looking models in Suzuki’s current lineup. The proportions feel right, and the design manages to look modern without trying too hard.
Key exterior details include the split LED headlight design, black polycarbonate wheel arch cladding, roof rails and front and rear skid plate garnishes that give it a hint of SUV toughness. The 16-inch wheels suit the overall look well, and the LED taillights with a full-width LED light bar add a premium touch at the rear. It looks far more expensive than it actually is, which is always a good thing.
Interior
Inside, the Fronx reminds you where Suzuki has kept costs in check. There is a noticeable amount of hard plastic, and it does not try to disguise it. That said, the cabin is well laid out, and what it lacks in plush materials, it makes up for with features.
The highlight is the crisp 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and is paired with a genuinely useful 360-degree view camera. You also get keyless entry with push-button start, wireless smartphone charging and a multifunction flat-bottom-style steering wheel, which adds a sporty touch.

The dual-tone colour scheme helps lift the cabin ambience, and while it may not feel premium, it does feel well screwed together. Practicality is decent for the class, with a boot offering 304 litres, enough for everyday errands and the odd weekend getaway.
On the road
Powering the Fronx is Suzuki’s familiar 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 77 kW and 138 Nm, paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission. On paper, the gearbox may raise eyebrows in 2025, but in real-world driving, it does an acceptable job, provided you drive it sensibly.
The engine suits the Fronx’s character well. It is smooth, predictable and well matched to urban driving. A 6-speed automatic would have been more ideal, especially on the open road, but the 4-speed is not a deal breaker in this application.
Suzuki claims an average fuel consumption of 5.7 L/100km, and during our time with the car we managed a very similar 5.8 L/100km. That is a solid result and reinforces the Fronx’s appeal as an economical daily runabout.
Ride comfort is good, steering is light, and the Fronx feels easy to place in traffic and tight parking spaces. It is not trying to be sporty, but it is honest and pleasant to drive.

Final word
The Suzuki Fronx 1.5 GLX Auto does exactly what it sets out to do. It looks great, offers a long list of features, delivers strong fuel efficiency and is easy to live with. While the interior materials and 4-speed automatic remind you that this is a budget-conscious offering, the overall package feels well judged.
At R368,900, the Fronx represents strong value in the compact crossover segment. It may not be the most powerful or the most sophisticated option out there, but it has character, practicality and that all-important Suzuki sensibility. Sometimes, that is more than enough.
