2025 Suzuki Swift 1.2 GLX review: Still one of SA’s best budget buys

The Suzuki Swift has been keeping rivals like the VW Polo Vivo on alert, especially on the sales charts where it continues to sit comfortably near the top. The latest model carries that momentum forward, offering strong value and everyday usability. We spent time with the 1.2 GLX manual, which slots just below the range-topping CVT, and here’s how it stacks up.

Design

The new Swift looks noticeably sharper than the outgoing model. Think of it as returning from the holidays with a cleaner haircut and a fresh pair of sneakers. With auto LED headlights, daytime running lights, LED taillights and 15-inch alloy wheels, the GLX arrives looking confident and well dressed. It even outshines a few of Suzuki’s own offerings.

Interior

The cabin focuses on practicality with just the right amount of tech. There is a 9-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with electric windows all round. Boot space is a useful 265 litres, ideal for groceries or a short weekend trip, and it grows to 589 litres with the rear seats folded. There are a few hard plastics around, but at this price point it is nothing unexpected.

Under the hood

Powering the GLX is a 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine that produces 60 kW and 112 Nm. It is paired with a five-speed manual gearbox that keeps the experience engaging. Around town you may work the clutch more often, but on the highway it holds its own as long as you keep the revs up. We averaged an impressive 5.4 L/100km, even with some spirited driving. Thanks to the chunky tyres, the Swift also deals with Joburg’s potholes with surprising confidence.

Safety

Safety equipment is solid for the segment. The GLX comes with six airbags, ABS with EBD, brake assist, electronic stability control and rear ISOFIX anchors.

Verdict

With fuel prices climbing and budgets under pressure, the Suzuki Swift GLX MT delivers welcome relief. It is not aiming to be the fastest or flashiest hatchback, but it nails reliability, efficiency and features without inflating the price. In a market filled with expensive badge-driven choices, the Swift remains the dependable option that consistently gets the job done.

The Suzuki Swift 1.2 GLX MT is priced at R271,900.
