Review: BMW X2 M35i xDrive – A compact crossover with bite

Style, speed, and attitude.
Style, speed, and attitude.

The BMW X2 M35i xDrive is one of those rare vehicles that seems to punch above its weight. Finished in Black Sapphire Metallic and riding on striking 21-inch wheels, our test car stood out with an aggressive stance that immediately draws the eye. It’s a bold, coupe-styled SUV that mirrors the silhouette of its larger sibling, the BMW X6, earning it the apt nickname — the “baby X6.”

Visually, the design is sporty and confident. However, the presence of quad tailpipes raised some eyebrows. While this setup is typically reserved for BMW’s full-fledged M models, here it feels slightly over-the-top, considering the M35i sits just below that tier in the performance hierarchy.

Inside, the cabin impresses with a premium layout, blending high-quality materials and solid ergonomics with BMW’s latest tech suite. That said, the sloping roofline, while visually striking, does compromise rear headroom and boot space somewhat. Rearward visibility is also hindered by the small rear window — a trade-off for the coupe-like design.

Under the hood, the X2 M35i hides a potent 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 235 kW and 400 Nm, paired with xDrive all-wheel drive and a slick-shifting 8-speed automatic. This results in seriously rapid performance: 0–100 km/h comes up in just 4.5 seconds, which puts it in hot hatch territory. Enthusiasts will also appreciate the induction noise, turbo spool, and the occasional exhaust pop that add character to the drive.

On the road, the X2 M35i feels planted and composed, with sharp steering and confident cornering ability. It’s fun to drive without being overly harsh, offering a well-balanced mix of daily usability and performance. BMW claims a fuel consumption figure of 7.8 L/100 km, though we averaged 9.0 L/100 km in mixed driving — a reasonable figure given the performance on tap.

Verdict

At a starting price of R1,228,936, the BMW X2 M35i xDrive is not cheap, but it offers a compelling and distinctive package for buyers seeking something different from the usual hot hatch or compact SUV. It delivers strong performance, bold design, and a touch of M division flair, even if some of that flair — like the quad pipes — might seem a bit overambitious.

For those who value style and speed in a compact, premium package, the X2 M35i is well worth a look.
