Volvo is charging ahead with its electrification plans, and the new EX30 Twin Motor Performance is proof they’re not playing around. It’s the smallest and most affordable EV in the Volvo family, but don’t let the size fool you—it packs some serious punch.
Performance that surprises
Under the hood (or rather, beneath the floor), the EX30 Twin Motor Performance serves up a total of 315kW and 543Nm of torque. That means this compact SUV can launch from 0 to 100km/h in just 3.6 seconds. That’s not just quick for an EV—it’s quick, full stop. You’ll be catching some sports cars by surprise at the robots.
Power comes from a 69kWh battery, good for a WLTP-rated range of 460km, although in real-world driving, we got around 400km—still more than enough for daily commutes and the odd out-of-town adventure. Plug it into a 150kW DC charger, and you’ll go from 10% to 80% in under 30 minutes.

Driving experience
The EX30’s low centre of gravity helps it feel planted in corners, while the suspension is well-tuned for both comfort and control. Whether you’re navigating tight city streets or cruising on the freeway, the EX30 delivers a smooth and composed ride. And it’s quiet—like, really quiet.
Minimalist cabin
Step inside, and you’ll find a cabin that feels futuristic yet calming. Volvo’s minimalist design is in full effect here, with sustainable materials like recycled fabrics and natural fibers. It’s a classy reminder that going green can still feel premium.
Front and center is the 12.3-inch vertical touchscreen running Google’s latest software. It’s sharp, intuitive, and loaded with built-in features like Google Maps and voice control. There’s also support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, so no one’s left out.
Passenger space is generous up front, and while the rear seats are comfortable for most adults, taller passengers might feel the sloping roof a bit. The 318-litre boot is practical for day-to-day use and expands to 904 litres when you fold the seats down.

Safety
This is a Volvo, so you know safety hasn’t taken a back seat. You get the full suite of driver aids: adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. A cool touch is Volvo’s “Driver Understanding” tech—it watches for signs of drowsiness or distraction and gives you a friendly nudge if you need to pay attention.
Final thoughts
With a starting price of R1,114,000, the EX30 Twin Motor Performance is excellent value in the premium EV space. The EX30 isn’t just another small electric SUV—it’s a stylish, powerful, and cleverly designed all-rounder that proves good things really do come in small packages. It may be compact, but it’s easily one of the best EVs we’ve tested so far.
