The 1 series is BMWs entry-level car. For years we’ve known it to be rear-wheel drive (most journalists and hardcore BMW fans) and fun to drive. The latest version, however, has changed completely, with it now being front and all-wheel-drive (like its competitors) due to it sharing the same UKL2 platform with current-generation MINI Clubman and BMW X1. Has this ruined the fun hatchback? Let’s find out…

Styling
It’s wider, taller, but it’s the same length as the previous-generation 1 Series. Styling is subjective, but I think this model looks stunning. I would personally opt for the BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line which blacks out the double kidney grille and side-view mirrors. There are three model lines to choose from, Standard, Sportline and M Sport package. Opting for the M Sport package will get you a sporty rear bumper with black inlay, a more aggressive front bumper, and 17-inch wheels. Our test unit was fitted with optional 19-inch multi-spoke wheels which costs R17,900.

Inside
Thanks to its new UKL2 platform, the engine is mounted sideways, powering the front wheels means it now has more room inside.

The inside of the new 1 Series is a beautiful place to be in. The interior is solid, the use of high-quality materials is evident throughout the cabin. The dashboard is taken straight out of the new BMW 3 Series, thanks to that it looks way better than its predecessor’s dash. All models come standard with a touchscreen infotainment system which comes with Apple CarPlay, which can be used via the touchscreen or rotary dial. The iDrive infotainment system is still top of its class, its intuitive and easy to use. Upfront you get optional wireless charging (R5800 option), one USB port, under the armrest is a USB C charging port, and two at the rear.
Thanks to its new UKL2 platform, the engine is mounted sideways, powering the front wheels means it now has more room inside. Upfront the driving position is excellent with plenty of adjustment from the electric seats. Our test unit fitted with Magma Red Sports seats were quite out there in terms of appearance but goes well with the Alpine White III exterior colour. The boot has gained 20 litres thanks to the new platform, and with the seats folded down in a 40:20:40 split, one can load more stuff in the back seats.

The Drive
Powering the BMW 1 Series is a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine that produces 103kW and 220Nm of torque. It’s outmuscled by the more powerful 1.4-litre four-cylinder engines you find in the Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz A-Class. But if you’re looking for more poke, BMW offers a 225 kW all-wheel-drive M135i. What it lacks in power it makes up for it with driving characteristics. It’s so good to drives, the 7-speed Steptronic transmission is smooth, and when you find yourself a good piece of the road the chassis is bang on point. Though it sports 19-inch wheels which are wrapped around some run-flat tyres, the ride is surprisingly very good.
The magic question is: has the switch from rear-wheel drive to front-wheel drive spoiled the fun in the 1 Series? To be honest, no.

The magic question is, has the switch from rear-wheel drive to front-wheel drive spoiled the fun in the 1 Series? To be honest no. It is still as fun to drive as the previous-generation 1 Series. BMW has done a great job with the chassis, engine, and transmission. Besides, the majority of people that will purchase the new 1 series won’t know the difference between front and rear-wheel drive. BMW claims 5.9 l/100km, but with mixed driving, I managed a best of 7.8 l/100km.
The Verdict
A lot has changed with the 1 Series in terms of aesthetics, driving characteristics, technology, and comfort. A basic 118i with minimal spec is a good buy. Start ticking through the options list and the price balloons quite a bit. It starts at R524,100.00 and our test unit with options brings the price to R619,797.50. That’s R93,800.00 in options. Until the new A3 arrives, the BMW seems to edge the Mercedes-Benz A-Class a bit in most aspects that I mention. All in all, It’s a brilliant car.
