The Isuzu D-Max 3.0TD V-Cross 4×4 has earned the affectionate nickname “Nogwaja” thanks to the legendary Phatizwe, a name you’ll hear called out at fuel stations, in traffic and essentialy every corner of the country. At R925,600, this double cab sits firmly in premium territory, offering character, comfort, and a quietly confident toughness that makes it stand out in a crowded segment.
Power and performance
Under the bonnet sits Isuzu’s familiar 3.0-litre turbodiesel with 140 kW and 450 Nm. It’s not chasing headline-grabbing numbers like some of its rivals (the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux can boast more outright punch in certain trims) but the Isuzu delivers its torque in a smooth, unhurried way. It’s the kind of engine that prefers consistency over fireworks.
Claimed consumption sits at 8.1 L/100 km, but in our real-world testing we averaged closer to 9.5 L/100 km. Still respectable for a 4×4 double cab of this size, but don’t expect miraculous fuel-sipping.
On the road
The V-Cross shines when it comes to ride comfort. The suspension strikes a good balance between firmness for load-carrying and compliance for everyday use. Whether cruising on the highway or bouncing over Joburg’s finest potholes, it never feels harsh or unsettled.
Design and presence
Our test unit came dressed in Desert Orange, paired with black wheels, a black sports bar with red detailing, and LED headlights, taillights, and fog lights. The result? It turns heads, though that might also be because people want to call it “Nogwaja.” It’s bold without being brash, and it carries itself with a quiet confidence that suits the Isuzu badge.

Inside the cabin
Step inside and the D-Max makes a solid impression. The seats are comfortable, with good cushioning for long trips. Rear passengers will appreciate the generous head and knee room, which isn’t always guaranteed in this segment.
The infotainment, however, does show its age. The interface feels dated and Apple CarPlay takes a little while to wake up, which can be mildly frustrating in a world where even your toaster wants to connect instantly. That said, we expect the upcoming facelift will sharpen things up in this department.

Verdict
The Isuzu D-Max V-Cross 4×4 is not the most powerful or the most tech-laden double cab on the market, but it doesn’t need to be. It’s a bakkie built with comfort, dependability, and real-world usability in mind.
Rivals may win on spec sheets, but the Isuzu wins on charm and comfort. And sometimes, that’s exactly what matters.
