DRIVEN: BMW 220d M Sport

Sheer driving pleasure in a more compact form.
Sheer driving pleasure in a more compact form.

We recently drove the new and stylish BWM 220d M Sport.

We still think there’s a slight disconnect between the front and the rear end, but I still think its a stunning looking car. Our test unit was finished in Portimao Blue Metallic and rolling on 19-inch wheels.

Inside feels familiar but with a new look, though different the premium-ness is still there. It looks small but will seat 4 passengers comfortably. The boot might seem small but it’s capable of fitting in two golf bags (as tested by @amg133). The infotainment screen and intuitive. One can navigate through it with touch or the rotary dial. It also supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Powering the 220d is a 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine that produces 140kW and 400Nm and employs a 48V mild-hybrid system for added efficiency. BMW claims 4.8 l/100 km, we managed a decent 5.5 l/100km during our time with it. Sporting 19-inch wheels you’d think the ride would be harsh but it’s quite compliant. The seating position is perfect and allows you to have some fun in corners when engaging it into Sport. This would be an ideal tourer and the transmission is buttery smooth and snappy when indulged in some twisties.

The BMW 220d is a great blend between driving fun and efficiency. A market for it exists and goes above and beyond in terms of a package and desirability. Pricing for BMW 220d starts from R 819 705,80.
