BMW X6 xDrive30d facelift brings sharper looks and hybrid boost

Updated styling, new tech, and improved efficiency for the third-generation Sports Activity Coupe.
Updated styling, new tech, and improved efficiency for the third-generation Sports Activity Coupe.

When BMW introduced the first X6 in 2008, it raised plenty of questions. A coupe-style SUV was unusual at the time, but the brand’s persistence gave birth to the Sports Activity Coupe (SAC) segment. Since then, the X6 has become a design benchmark and inspired rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe and Audi Q8. Now in its third generation, the model continues to stand out with sharper styling and improved dynamics.

Design updates

The exterior revisions are subtle but effective. Slimmer Matrix LED headlights, a restyled front bumper, and new LED taillights at the rear sharpen its appearance. The standard M Sport Package enhances the overall presence, while trapezoidal exhausts at the back underline the sporty character.

Interior

Inside, the cabin adopts BMW’s latest Curved Display, which combines a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with a 14.9-inch infotainment screen powered by iDrive 8.5. The system looks modern and responsive, though it does take some time to get accustomed to. A Harman Kardon sound system is standard, providing excellent clarity and depth. High-quality materials and strong attention to comfort are evident throughout, befitting the X6’s price tag of R1,888,637.

Powertrain

The facelifted X6 xDrive30d is equipped with a 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel engine paired with a mild-hybrid system. Output stands at 219 kW and 670 Nm, delivered to all four wheels through BMW’s eight-speed automatic transmission. Despite its size and performance, BMW claims average consumption of 7.8 L/100 km. In our test, the X6 achieved 6.1 L/100 km on the highway and around 7.2 L/100 km in mixed driving, figures that are impressive for a vehicle of this nature.

Verdict

The updated BMW X6 xDrive30d retains its strong presence while introducing useful efficiency gains and technology upgrades. It remains powerful, more economical than expected, and continues to deliver the mix of bold styling, luxury, and everyday practicality that has defined it since the first generation.
