Volkswagen unveils new ID. Tiguan electric SUV with up to 600km range

Volkswagen has unveiled the new ID. Tiguan, an electric SUV set to replace the ID.4 and ID.5 when it launches in early 2027.

The new model adopts Volkswagen’s latest design language, with a more traditional SUV shape and a redesigned interior. It will be sold alongside the petrol, diesel and hybrid-powered Tiguan.

Three powertrain options will be available at launch. The entry-level model produces 140kW and uses a 58kWh battery, while a 210kW version gets a 77kWh battery. The range-topping 4MOTION all-wheel-drive model produces 220kW and also uses a 77kWh battery.

Depending on the configuration, Volkswagen claims a WLTP driving range of up to 600km. Towing capacity reaches 1,800kg with the smaller battery and 2,000kg with the larger pack.

New interior and technology

Inside, the ID. Tiguan gets a new digital layout featuring a 10-inch driver display and a 15-inch infotainment touchscreen. A 12-inch passenger display will also be available, allowing the front passenger to access entertainment and other functions without distracting the driver.

Volkswagen has brought back physical controls for several functions, including climate settings and steering-wheel operation. A new centre-console controller handles audio volume and track selection.

Another addition is the Retro display mode, which recreates the instrument graphics of the Golf IV and allows drivers to select classic Volkswagen models for a virtual garage on the infotainment screen.

The equipment list includes one-pedal driving and Connected Travel Assist, which can assist with lane changes on motorways and bring the vehicle to a stop at red traffic lights. Optional features include ventilated and massage front seats, a panoramic sunroof and a 480-watt Harman Kardon sound system.

More space and practicality

The ID. Tiguan offers seating for five, a luggage compartment with up to 534 litres of capacity and a 32-litre front storage compartment, commonly known as a frunk.

A Vehicle-to-Load adapter will also allow owners to power external electrical devices using the vehicle’s battery.

The SUV will be offered in four trim levels: Trend, Life, Style and R-Line.

Pre-sales in Germany and several other European markets are scheduled to begin on 13 October 2026, with prices starting at €42,695. Volkswagen has not yet confirmed South African availability or pricing.
