Who remembers the Hummer SUV? Well if you remember it like I do it was a big, heavy, gas-guzzling tank of a vehicle. Now it’s back and it’s the same huge machine as it once was but this time it’s also trying to save the world, as this GMC Hummer is electric.

This is probably the most confusing thing, as Hummer is pretty much well-known for its gas-guzzling ways, but that’s was one of the reasons why it was stopped many years back. With this, you still receive the intimidating get-out-of-my-way looks, but won’t regret the day you bought it once it’s time to fill petrol, for the fifth time in 4 hours. This electric version could make a lot more people who wanted a Hummer actually go right ahead and buy it.

The electric motor for the Hummer will be a powerful one, the top-spec Hummers electric motors will produce 1000hp or 745kW and over 15000 N.m of torques, I really didn’t believe I was reading correctly but GMC say that that is the estimate for now. 0-100 will be dealt with in approximately 3 seconds.

Now it can’t be a Hummer without being great off-road and this new Hummer will be packed with technology and off-road aids, starting with underbody cameras so you can see the trail or rocks that you will climb over, these cameras are also waterproof. The Hummer will also have special tyres made for it by Goodyear, that will give great balance for both on and off-road.

The design is pretty much exactly how you would expect a futuristic Hummer to look like but on the inside, we do see two screens one for the driver and one that controls the infotainment. The roof of the new GMC Hummer is also detachable and it is split in four so if one out of four people in the car does not one the roof off they can keep it on.

The GMC Hummer EV edition 1 will be available from next year but unfortunately, this is all for the USA and no word has been said on a South African launch.
