Meet The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series

After 9 years, we finally see a new Black Series model.
After 9 years, we finally see a new Black Series model.

Mercedes-AMG GT has turned to the dark side. It’s in the name of you don’t believe me, the new Mercedes-AMG GT black series is upon us coming straight of the dungeons of fire to be a fire breathing monster on the roads just like it’s predecessors who dawned the Black Series badge.

The engine is still the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 that we know but seemingly if a normal Mercedes model wants to turn full black series, it has to have a change of heart just a  little bit in this case the engine has been tweaked so much that it has a new designation: M178 LS2. The changes include: a new flat-plane crankshaft, new camshafts, a  dry-sump configuration, a revised firing order, some new exhaust manifolds,  turbos have been reworked and larger intercoolers, that is a lot. The result of all of these upgrades the engine now produces 537kW and 800 Nm, also known as the most powerful V8 engine AMG has put on a road car.

With great power, comes great acceleration and Speed. This beast can get to 100 in a dashing 3.2 seconds, being rear-wheel drive that is pretty amazing to help it do that the 7-speed dual-clutch AMG gearbox has been recalibrated handling the power much better and the wheels are wrapped in special Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres.

The appearance is as wild as it can be, with carbon fibre bits everywhere. The front is super aggressive with a long bonnet with slats that look like cuts from when it was still in the dungeon, the wide front splitter has two setting Street and Race. On the side, we got race-inspired side skirts, a double-bubble roof at the top and in the rear there is a fittingly aggressive diffuser with quad pipes for the noise. You cannot miss the large rear wing that is adjustable manually or electronically.

Inside, still looks pretty familiar to the GTR PRO, with the bucket seats and a similar console layout. What’s new is the 12.3-inch driver’s display and a 10.25-inch infotainment screen. In some places around the world, you can get a track package option to include a roll cage, 2kg fire extinguisher and 4 point harness for the driver and passenger seats.

Sometimes cars can complicated but that is the beauty in it, cars have different characteristics and brands make a car in their own way that’s a reason why I love these machines. They can invoke all kinds of emotions in a person and my job is to try explain the nature of each car we get and share it with you.
