DRIVEN: Hyundai Tucson R2.0 Sport Turbodiesel

Many consumers are opting out of purchasing sedans and getting into the market for something with more ground clearance and a little bit bigger. Add a bit of sportiness and Hyundai has something you might like, the Tucson R2.0 Sport Turbodiesel. The pre-facelift Sport version was a hit and filled dealer order books pretty quickly. Ever since it received a midlife refresh, Hyundai decided to bring the Sport version back.

Styling

The Hyundai Tucson is a very likable car, But to add more flare to the Sport it now features a body kit, model specific 19-inch black wheels, and quad-exhaust pipes at the rear. It’s certainly not some people’s taste, but we sure do like it. Its got a mean stance and attitude.

Inside

The interior is spacious and tidy, all the buttons are exactly where their supposed to be. It features a 7-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You don’t sit low in your seat like a sportscar but a higher seating position for good all-round visibility.

The Drive

The Hyundai Tucson Sport has two engine derivatives, a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine, and a 2-litre turbodiesel engine. Our test unit was the latter, it produces 150kW and 460Nm of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. Its a little bit thirsty as we managed a best of 8.5 l/100km. Ride quality is fairly good, with overtaking maneuvers being quite effortless. What we noticed though that at times the front-wheels would be overwhelmed by the power and sometimes finding screeching the front the front wheels.

Verdict

Its comfortable, quite fun to drive, and looks pretty bad ass. It doesn’t offer the shouty exhaust of its turbocharged petrol sibling but offers plenty if low down torque. The Hyundai Tucson R2.0 Sport Turbodiesel is priced at R674,900.
