The Chery brand in South Africa is rapidly expanding, not just by introducing new models at a fast pace, but by offering vehicles that are both stylish and packed with technology. We recently had the opportunity to test the facelifted 7-seater Tiggo 8 Pro Max 2.0T Executive to see how it stacks up.

Exterior updates

Our test vehicle, finished in a striking “Bokke” Green, was quite the head-turner. Observant eyes will notice the facelift’s new front bumper and grille. A standout feature is the new illuminated Chery logo, which lights up when locking or unlocking the car, creating a sleek look in the dark. The most significant changes are at the rear, where redesigned light clusters now perform a choreographed sequence when the vehicle is locked or unlocked.

Standard exterior features of the Tiggo 8 Pro Max include LED headlights and taillights with sequential turn signals, 19-inch wheels, quad exhausts, and a panoramic sunroof.

Updated interior

Inside, the cabin feels upmarket, with Chery using high-quality materials and solid fit and finish. Standard interior features include a large 24.7-inch integrated digital instrument cluster and infotainment screens, redesigned cabin elements, a panoramic sunroof, and an 8-speaker Sony sound system. The previous climate control screen has been replaced with a wireless charging pad, new gear lever, and redesigned controls. However, the new climate control panel beneath the infotainment screen could be more user-friendly, as it’s difficult to see in bright conditions.

Practicality

The Tiggo 8 Pro Max offers ample space. With all 7 seats in use, boot space is limited to 193 liters. Folding the third and second rows expands the cargo area to 892 and 1930 liters, respectively, offering generous storage capacity. The vehicle also comes with front power seats that are heated and cooled, four USB ports, and a sliding rear bench to better accommodate third-row passengers. The third row is best suited for small children or short trips, as it lacks ample space for adults.

Performance

Under the hood, the Tiggo 8 Pro Max is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 187 kW and 390 Nm of torque, paired with a 7-speed DCT gearbox that drives the front wheels. Chery claims a fuel consumption of 7.6 L/100km, and during our test, we averaged 7.8 L/100km, with the lowest being 6.2 L/100km. The ride is smooth, and the engine provides plenty of power for overtaking.

Safety

The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max comes with a comprehensive list of safety features, including 6 airbags, ISOFIX, ABS with EBD, Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Traction Control System (TCS), Roll Stability Control (RSC), rear parking sensors, a rearview camera with dynamic guides, a 360º HD panoramic imaging camera, and Door Opening Warning (DOW) prevention.

Verdict

Priced at R669,900, the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max 2.0T Executive offers excellent value in a competitive segment. When compared to German or Japanese rivals, which often come with a price tag well over R1 million, the Tiggo 8 Pro Max presents a compelling option. Despite a few minor issues, it stands out as an attractive choice.
