Volkswagen ID.4 Pro: Electrifying simplicity

Volkswagen’s ID.4 Pro is an electric SUV that doesn’t shout, “Look at me!” Instead, it quietly sets out to prove that EVs can be practical, approachable, and even a little stylish. With its no-fuss design, tech-forward features, and family-friendly size, the ID.4 feels like a car that’s ready to slot into daily life. Though not available for sale in South Africa yet, it gives us a taste of what VW could bring to our roads—and plugs right into the growing EV conversation.

Exterior

If the ID.4 Pro had a personality, it would be that cool, laid-back friend who doesn’t try too hard to impress. Its clean lines and grille-free front showcase its electric nature, while touches like Matrix LED headlights and the Blue Dusk Metallic paint bring sophistication to the party. Sitting on 19-inch Hammer alloy wheels, it looks planted and confident without veering into flashy territory. In a market where EVs often scream “futuristic,” the ID.4 keeps things refreshingly grounded.

Interior

Open the doors, and you’re greeted with a spacious cabin that prioritizes practicality and comfort. The minimalist dashboard is anchored by a crisp 10-inch touchscreen, which handles navigation, entertainment, and vehicle settings. The 30-colour ambient lighting adds a dash of fun, letting you match the mood to the moment.

Thanks to clever packaging (read: no engine), the interior feels roomier than traditional SUVs of this size. Rear passengers get ample legroom, and there’s enough boot space for groceries, luggage, or a spontaneous beach day trip. While the materials are well-chosen, some touches could feel more premium, especially when compared to pricier rivals like the Volvo XC40 Recharge.

Battery and range

With a 77 kWh battery pack, the ID.4 Pro promises an impressive range of up to 519 km—perfect for commutes and weekend adventures alike. Charging is quick and convenient, with DC fast charging bringing the battery from 10% to 80% in about 38 minutes. For South African buyers, range anxiety is a real concern, but the ID.4’s capability means fewer stops, provided charging infrastructure keeps up.

Behind the wheel

The ID.4 Pro isn’t chasing adrenaline—it’s here for comfort and ease. Its 150 kW electric motor and 310 Nm of torque deliver instant, seamless acceleration, gliding from 0–100 km/h in 8.5 seconds. On the road, it feels planted and composed, with a suspension tuned to iron out bumps and rough patches. While it lacks the sporty edge, it’s the kind of drive you’ll appreciate after a long day at work or on the school run.

Verdict

Volkswagen’s ID.4 Pro isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel—it’s simply making EV ownership feel more accessible and practical. Buyers looking for something sportier or more luxurious might find themselves leaning toward the BMW iX1 or Volvo XC40 Recharge.

In South Africa, the real test for the ID.4 Pro will be pricing and the availability of charging stations. But if Volkswagen does bring it here, it could be the start of a more electrified and approachable future for local drivers.
