Mercedes-Benz GLA 200d – a stylish SUV into the German, but with a premium price tag

The Mercedes-Benz GLA 200d is your golden ticket into the world of luxury SUVs bearing the three-pointed star. As the entry-level SUV in the Mercedes-Benz line-up, it blends compact dimensions with premium features, making it ideal for city dwellers who appreciate a touch of elegance with their practicality. But does it live up to the high standards of its pricier siblings? Let’s take a look.

Exterior

The GLA 200d wears its Mercedes-Benz badge with pride, sporting sleek lines, a confident stance, and just enough chrome to say, “I’ve arrived,” without shouting it. With the optional AMG Line and Night Package, the SUV steps up its game with sportier touches like a bold grille, 20-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels, and black accents that give it a more aggressive presence. In Mountain Grey, it looks like it’s ready for a photo shoot on Long Street. Compact dimensions make parking a breeze, while polished aluminium roof rails remind you it’s ready for weekend getaways, even if that’s just to a braai with your chommies in Pretoria.

Interior

Step inside, and the GLA 200d impresses with its premium materials and attention to detail. The ARTICO man-made leather paired with Bertrix fabric seats and a star-pattern trim create a stylish yet understated cabin. The tech is where it truly shines. The MBUX multimedia system features a central media display with extended functionality, along with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for seamless smartphone integration.
Options like the Premium Package and Panoramic Sliding Sunroof elevate the experience even further, adding features like ambient lighting and more natural light for a spacious feel. Rear-seat space is adequate for adults on shorter trips, and the EASY-PACK tailgate makes loading your Woolies shopping bags feel more high-end than ever.

The interior, though well-crafted, feels a bit cramped for taller passengers in the rear, and storage space is modest compared to competitors like the Volvo XC40. Some features, like heated seats and advanced driver aids, are only available as expensive add-ons, which feels stingy at this price point.

Engine

Powering the GLA 200d is a 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel engine, delivering 110 kW and 320 Nm of torque. With an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission, the drive is smooth and responsive, perfect for the daily Sandton-to-CBD commute. It’s no AMG rocket, taking 9.1 seconds to hit 100 km/h, but it handles well with comfort suspension and steering-wheel paddles for when you want to feel like Lewis Hamilton (sort of). The GLA 200d is reasonably efficient, sipping just 7 L/100 km during our stint (Merc claims 5.1 L/100 km). The engine, while smooth, doesn’t deliver a thrilling drive, and there’s a noticeable lag when accelerating from a standstill. Rivals like the BMW X1 offer a more engaging experience behind the wheel.

Verdict

The Mercedes-Benz GLA 200d is a stellar introduction to the brand’s SUV line-up, offering luxury, tech, and an effortless drive in a compact package. However, it comes with a few compromises. The interior feels a touch cramped for its price tag, and many desirable features are locked behind costly extras. While its starting price of R978,693 is a bit steep (and can balloon quickly with extras like the R65,000 Premium Package), this is the reality of premium vehicles in 2024. Just be prepared to answer your friends when they ask, “So, how much did you actually spend on it?”
