Large and efficient. We drive the Range Rover Sport P460e

In the dynamic world of luxury SUVs, the Range Rover Sport P460e Plug-in Hybrid stands out as a symbol of innovation, effortlessly merging luxury with environmental awareness. This plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) not only impresses with its iconic design but also leads the way in responsible driving.

Eco-friendly elegance
The P460e adds an eco-conscious touch to the Range Rover Sport line-up, allowing for short electric-only trips and reducing overall fuel consumption. Under its sleek hood lies a powerful combination of a turbocharged engine and an electric motor which produces 338kW/550Nm, providing a refined driving experience. Land Rover claims between 109 – 125 km in electric only mode. In the real world however, we found ourselves getting around 90km, which is honestly not too bad.

High-tech cabin features

True to the Range Rover tradition, the P460e pampers its occupants with a luxurious interior. Premium materials, exquisite craftsmanship, and advanced technology create a haven of comfort. At the heart of the cabin is the PIVI Pro Duo infotainment system, featuring a dual touchscreen setup that controls everything from climate settings to navigation. Smartphone integration, voice commands, and advanced safety features further enhance the driving experience. A heads up, one has to invest in a proper micro-fiber cloth as the touchscreen is a finger print magnet. Despite its sophisticated exterior, the Range Rover Sport PHEV remains true to its off-road roots with Terrain Response 2 technology. Whether navigating city streets or tackling rugged terrain, this SUV adapts seamlessly to its environment.

Living with a luxurious Plug-In Hybrid

During our time with the P460e, we found the electric-only range somewhat limited but still a valuable addition. While the electric-only capability is commendable, it might not suffice for longer journeys, but it’s perfect for short trips, especially if a charger is nearby, as this model doesn’t recharge the batteries using the engine.

Luxury comes at a price, and the Range Rover Sport PHEV’s premium cost may deter budget-conscious buyers. However, those seeking top-tier refinement are unlikely to hesitate. The hybrid components slightly reduce cargo space, affecting utility for that prioritizing hauling capacity. When not concerned with cargo, drivers enjoy a smooth and comfortable ride. The transition between electric and petrol power is seamless, offering smooth and responsive acceleration. The air suspension system absorbs bumps and undulations effortlessly, ensuring a serene cabin even on rough roads.

Impressive handling and versatility

The Range Rover Sport PHEV surprises with its agile handling, belying its substantial size. Precise steering and well-tuned suspension make it enjoyable to drive in various conditions. Drivers can tailor their experience with selectable modes, including electric-only for city commutes, hybrid for a balanced approach, and dynamic mode for spirited driving.

Verdict

In summary, the Range Rover Sport PHEV is a beacon of luxury and sustainability in the competitive SUV market. While its premium price of R2,716,700 (before options) and limited electric range may pose considerations, the overall blend of performance, luxury, and environmental consciousness makes it a compelling choice for those seeking the pinnacle of automotive refinement.
