Diesel goodness: We sample the new Mercedes-Benz GLC 300d 4Matic

The GLC 300d brings the fight directly to its German counterparts.

The premium mid-size SUV space is a highly contested one. Mercedes-Benz SA launched their new GLC range which is set to take the fight to the BMW X3 and Audi Q5 thanks to a new exterior design, upgraded cabin and mild-hybrid engines. We recently got our hands on the new GLC 300d SUV to see what’s new on the German manufacturers SUV.

Kicking off with the design, the new GLC gets new headlights and taillights design. It also gets a new radiator grille and chrome under guard. Our test unit came fitted with optional AMG-line exterior, and 20-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels which enhances the already good looking exterior of the SUV.

Inside the new GLC is a beautiful place to be and resembles the new generation C-Class. The cabin is premium with Merc utilizing high-quality materials throughout. Head and legroom is plentiful and now has an increased boot capacity of 620-litres (70-litres more than its predecessor). Options on our tester included a panoramic sliding sunroof for ambiance in the cabin as well as a USB package for added practicality when it comes to charging devices. We love the new flat bottom steering wheel, but traditional buttons are dearly missed as these are quite finicky to use.

The GLC 300d is powered by a 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine that produces a rather healthy 198kW and 550Nm. It sends its power to all four corners via a 9G-Tronic transmission. Thanks to the mild-hybrid system, it adds an additional 15 kW and 200Nm. For everyday driving, its more than enough for the large SUV. Claimed fuel consumption is 6.1 L/100km, but at the end of our stint we found ourselves sitting at a rather economical 6.6 L/100km. In terms of everyday driving, the GLC 300d feels very eager, it has a sporty character but also quite comfortable.

One of our favorite features is the rear-wheel steering. Maneuvering the SUV is God-tier, it takes a while to get use to the feeling, but when you do, it’s magnificent. Turning at slow speeds is buttery smooth whilst initiating tight bends is a breeze.

Whilst its other German counterparts are up there in terms of style, cabin execution, and driving dynamics, the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300d seems to pip them slightly with some features that makes living with it that much better in the long run. Pricing for the Mercedes-Benz GLC300d starts from R1,508,837.
