The most powerful production four-cylinder cars in the world have landed in SA.

Thanks to Covid-19 many manufacturers have either had to wait to launch their cars virtually or several months after it’s been introduced into the market. Nevertheless, Mercedes-Benz SA has officially launched their A 45 S and CLA 45 S.

At the heart of both these cars lies the most powerful production four-cylinder engines in the world, and at 2.0-litres to be exactly. Both these brutes produce 310kW and 500Nm of torque. The A45 S will do the 0 – 100 km/h sprint in 3.9 seconds while the CLA 45 S will do the sprint in 4.0 seconds flat. Power is sent to all-four-wheels via an AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 8G dual-clutch transmission.

Depending on your mood and location Drivers can choose from six AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving modes: Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport +, Individual and RACE as a standard. The optional AMG RIDE CONTROL adaptive damping system enables the driver to choose between three different suspension control modes, from comfort-focused to sporty. Stopping power comes courtesy of 4-piston monobloc fixed front callipers act on 350 x 34 millimetre brake discs, while at the rear axle, 1-piston floating callipers act on 330 x 22 millimetre brake discs. The optional AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package have an even larger braking system, with 6-piston fixed callipers and 360 x 36 millimetre brake discs at the front.

Visually, separating the full-blown AMG models to standard ones will be pretty easy. The A45 S and CLA 45 S get AMG-specific radiator grille, wider front wings with flared wheel arches to create space for the wider front axle, and a front apron featuring a “jet-wing” design. If that’s not enough a pairs of round 90mm-diameter tailpipes with internal fluting and AMG lettering will seal the deal. Both models also come standard with 19-inch wheels.

Inside the A 45 S & CLA 45 S features the firms MBUX infotainment system. Users can choose between three AMG display styles for the instrument cluster: Classic, Sport, and Supersport. The Supersport mode is particularly striking, with a central, round rev counter and additional information presented in the form of bars to the left and right of the rev counter.
