BMW's entry level SUV impresses.

Introduced in 2009, the BMW X1 has undergone a significant transformation, emerging as a more attractive, larger, and technologically advanced. We got to sample the sDrive18i variant, which sits between sDrive18d and xDrive 30e.

Striking Aesthetics

Over the years, the BMW X1 has undergone a stunning evolution, boasting a more captivating appearance than ever before. Our test model, adorned with optional 20-inch wheels, Individual high-gloss Shadow Line (optional), and finished in Mineral white paint, achieved an ultra-modern aesthetic. The optional Adaptive LED headlights, part of a package including Comfort access, High beam assist, and Storage for wireless charging, contribute to the overall appeal.

Modern Interior

The interior exudes a premium feel, featuring high-quality, soft-touch materials. Equipped with BMW’s latest iDrive 8 infotainment system supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a BMW M-Sport steering wheel, a curved windscreen display, and wireless charging, the cabin offers a contemporary experience. Optional extras such as a panoramic sunroof and a Harmon/kardon sound system enhance the ambiance. The absence of a rotary wheel for the infotainment screen means to investing in microfiber cloths to address fingerprint marks on the touchscreen.

Spacious and Functional

The cabin provides ample space and storage, with generous head and legroom for all occupants. Boasting a substantial 540-litre boot space, the X1 rivals its larger sibling, the BMW X3, making it a commendable choice in its segment.

Performance

Under the hood, the BMW X1 sDrive18i is powered by a 1.5-litre engine delivering 115kW/230Nm, coupled with a seven-speed Steptronic transmission. The engine delivers a punchy performance, and the transmission ensures a quiet and smooth driving experience in urban and highway settings. At low speeds, however, its worth noting that the engine is quite loud. Despite riding on 20-inch wheels with low-profile tires, the X1 maintains a comfortable ride. Our fuel economy test yielded 7.2 L/100km, slightly exceeding the claimed 6.5.

Safety Features

Standard safety features include Cruise Control with a brake function, a front-collision warning system, and Parking Assistant with a Reversing Assist Camera and Reversing Assistant.

Verdict

The new BMW X1 impresses on multiple fronts, combining appealing aesthetics, dynamic driving characteristics, and a powerful engine. While the base price starts at R768,045.40, customization options can elevate the cost, placing our tester just above the R950k mark. Overall, the BMW X1 stands out as a well-rounded package.
