We drive the 359kW BYD Atto 8 Performance DM-P AWD

The idea of a seven-seat family SUV is usually associated with school runs, weekend getaways and the occasional argument over who gets to sit in the third row. The BYD Atto 8 Performance DM-P AWD, however, appears to have missed that memo.

As the flagship plug-in hybrid SUV in BYD’s local line-up, the Atto 8 brings together the things buyers in this segment expect: plenty of space, a long list of features and enough technology to keep everyone occupied. What makes it particularly interesting, though, is the performance hiding beneath its rather sensible exterior.

At first glance, there is little to suggest that this sizeable SUV can embarrass some genuinely quick cars at the traffic lights. The design is clean and contemporary, with a prominent front end, slim LED headlights, flush-fitting door handles and sizeable alloy wheels. At the rear, the full-width LED light bar is a standout feature and gives the Atto 8 a distinctive signature at night.

It is a handsome thing, but perhaps its biggest trick is how well it disguises its performance credentials. This is very much a wolf in family-SUV clothing.

Inside, BYD has thrown pretty much everything at it. The cabin feels suitably upmarket and comes loaded with standard equipment, including a rotating 15.6-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, panoramic sunroof and four-zone voice control.

There is also a comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems, while the overall quality of the materials makes the Atto 8 feel every bit like a flagship model.

Space is another strong point. With seating for seven, the Atto 8 has been designed with families in mind and offers ample room for passengers. The generous specification also strengthens its value proposition, particularly when compared with other premium SUVs in this price bracket.

But let’s be honest, you probably won’t remember the Atto 8 for its voice control or spacious third row.

You’ll remember how ridiculously quick it is.

The Atto 8 uses BYD’s DM-P plug-in hybrid system, combining a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with two electric motors. The result is a rather substantial 359kW and 675Nm, with all four wheels receiving a share of the action.

For a vehicle weighing more than 2.5 tonnes, the numbers are almost comical. BYD claims a 0-100km/h sprint of just 4.9 seconds, and having experienced the acceleration firsthand, it certainly feels every bit as urgent as those figures suggest.

Plant your right foot and the Atto 8 takes off with an aggression that feels completely at odds with its size and purpose. There is something genuinely amusing about watching a large seven-seat SUV disappear into the distance while carrying enough space for an entire family and their luggage.

Thankfully, it isn’t exhausting to live with when you’re not trying to demonstrate its launch control abilities to unsuspecting passengers.

Around town, the Atto 8 settles into the role of a comfortable and refined family SUV. It is smooth, quiet and easy to drive, offering a completely different personality when you’re simply commuting or transporting the family.

Efficiency is another part of the equation. BYD claims fuel consumption of 1.4L/100km, while the combined driving range is rated at up to 1,020km. As with any plug-in hybrid, achieving the best possible figures will depend heavily on how often you charge it, but the potential for impressive efficiency is certainly there.

After spending time with the BYD Atto 8 Performance DM-P AWD, it becomes clear that this is more than just another premium family SUV entering an increasingly crowded market.

It offers the practicality expected from a large seven-seater, a cabin packed with technology and equipment, and performance that genuinely catches you off guard. It is the sort of vehicle that can handle the school run in the morning and leave a few performance cars questioning their life choices later that afternoon.

At R1,259,900, the Atto 8 is firmly positioned in premium territory. It isn’t cheap, but the sheer amount of standard equipment, interior space and performance helps justify the asking price.

For buyers looking for a luxurious and practical seven-seat SUV but unwilling to sacrifice straight-line performance, the BYD Atto 8 Performance DM-P AWD presents a compelling alternative.

Just be careful who you lend it to. They might not give it back.
