The Volkswagen Amarok has earned a reputation as one of the most refined double cabs on the market, but the 2.3 TSI PanAmericana offers something a little different. Instead of the familiar diesel powertrain, this derivative swaps compression ignition for a turbocharged petrol engine, creating a bakkie that feels more like a performance SUV than a traditional workhorse.
Visually, the PanAmericana certainly stands out. Finished in white with contrasting black accents, alloy wheels and dark exterior trim, it gives off serious Stormtrooper vibes. It’s a bold look that suits the Amarok’s muscular proportions, while the PanAmericana treatment adds just enough attitude without going over the top.
Step inside and you’ll find a cabin that feels every bit as premium as its price tag suggests. The layout is clean and uncluttered, with high-quality materials throughout and an infotainment system that’s intuitive to use. Volkswagen has done an excellent job of making the Amarok feel more like a premium SUV than a commercial vehicle, while cabin insulation is among the best in the segment. Wind and road noise are kept to a minimum, making long-distance journeys effortless.

Under the bonnet is a 2.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing 222kW and 452Nm, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The numbers tell part of the story, but it’s the way the engine delivers its performance that really impresses. It’s smooth, refined and incredibly quiet, building speed effortlessly with a strong surge of acceleration. Volkswagen claims a 0-100km/h time of around 7.6 seconds, and from behind the wheel, it’s easy to believe.
The Amarok’s ride quality is another highlight. The suspension does an excellent job of soaking up imperfections, giving it a composed, car-like feel that’s rare in the bakkie segment. Whether you’re commuting through town or spending hours on the open road, it remains comfortable and confidence-inspiring.
Despite its road-focused character, capability hasn’t been forgotten. Standard 4MOTION four-wheel drive provides excellent traction when conditions become challenging, while the Amarok retains a maximum braked towing capacity of 3,500kg, making it more than capable of towing boats, trailers or caravans.
The trade-off comes when you ask more from the engine. Volkswagen claims a combined fuel consumption figure of 9.7L/100km, but during our time with the Amarok we averaged 10.8L/100km. That’s not unreasonable given the performance on offer, but it does become noticeably thirstier when driven enthusiastically.

Another consideration is its intended purpose. While the petrol engine is smoother and more refined than the diesel alternatives, it doesn’t deliver the effortless low-end pulling power of the V6 TDI. Buyers who regularly tow heavy loads or use their bakkie for demanding commercial work may still find the diesel better suited to their needs.
Verdict
The VW Amarok 2.3 TSI PanAmericana is a distinctive offering, but that’s exactly what makes it so appealing. It combines premium comfort, impressive refinement and genuinely quick performance in a package that looks every bit as good as it drives.
At R1,099,000, it isn’t aimed at the traditional bakkie buyer. Instead, it’s for someone who wants the practicality and capability of a double cab, but values performance, comfort and everyday refinement above outright towing grunt. If that sounds like you, the Amarok 2.3 TSI PanAmericana is one of the most enjoyable petrol-powered bakkies you can buy today.
