As much as BMW invented the coupe SUV, Mercedes-Benz has caught up to the trend and brings the competition to the X4 with the GLC Coupé.

The GLC was introduced in 2015, a few years down the line it’s received a refresh. It features new LED High-Performance headlamps, redesigned all-LED rear lights are also included as standard as well as a line of brand new engines for both Coupé and Crossover. The refresh has helped it looked sleeker than before. The optional 20-inch AMG wheels give it more presence. The GLC looks better than the X4 in my opinion, the C-Pillar haunch goes well with the design of the whole car. Meanwhile, in the X4 the haunch on the C-Pillar seems a bit lost.

Inside
The cabin also receives an update, with the addition of high-grade materials, and optional fully digital instrument cluster. The GLC Coupé comes standard with learn-capable infotainment system MBUX – which features the iconic “Hey Mercedes”, and supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It’s spacious and seats 4 passengers easily – but I must point out that rear vision is hindered by the cars sloping roofline. The leather and suede seats are comfortable, and very supportive.

The Drive
The engine offers plenty of grunt – step on the loud pedal and there’s very little hesitation, don’t lift and it hauls like a train.
Both GLC and GLC Coupé are powered by a new line of petrol and diesel engines. The GLC 300d is powered by a 2.0l turbodiesel engine which engineers have managed to squeeze out 180kW and 500Nm. The engine offers plenty of grunt, step on the loud pedal and there’s very little hesitation, don’t lift and it hauls like a train. Power is sent through Mercs 4Matic all-wheel-drive system via a nine-speed automatic transmission. It’s good for a 0-100 km/h sprint in 6.5 seconds and goes on to do a top speed of 231 km/h. During our test, I managed a best of 8.0 l/100km. It offers a firm ride, I rather like the ride on the X4. The X4 ride is sporty but also comfortable.
The GLC 300d starts from R 1 054 960. The styling is not for the introvert. That said, it’s a rather stylish car and its built for people who prefer aesthetics rather than comfort. For appeal, I’d get the GLC Coupé but for driving pleasure and driving dynamics I’d get the BMW X4.
