2026 Lepas L4 Pantera review: More SUV for your money?

The South African SUV market is not short on options, so any newcomer hoping to get noticed needs more than a fancy badge and a touchscreen. Enter the Lepas L4 Pantera.

As the flagship model in the local Lepas range, the L4 Pantera arrives with ambitious styling, a generous equipment list and a R419,000 price tag. On paper, it certainly appears to offer plenty of metal and equipment for the money.

Designed to stand out

There is nothing particularly shy about the L4 Pantera’s styling. Lepas says its design draws inspiration from a leopard, which explains the “Leopard Eye” LED headlights and the prominent diamond-pattern grille.

The bodywork is sharply sculpted, giving the SUV a muscular appearance without going overboard. At the rear, the design is cleaner and more restrained, while the 17-inch alloy wheels complete the package.

Whether the leopard inspiration is immediately obvious is open to interpretation, but one thing is certain: the L4 Pantera does not disappear into a parking lot full of compact SUVs.

A well-equipped cabin

Inside is where the L4 Pantera starts making a particularly strong case for itself.

The cabin has a clean layout and feels more upmarket than its price might suggest. Dominating the dashboard is a large 13.2-inch portrait infotainment screen, which handles most of the vehicle’s functions.

The system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while voice control is also included. Other notable features include a 50W wireless charging pad, electric sunroof and ventilated front seats.

It is the sort of equipment list normally associated with vehicles positioned further up the price ladder, and Lepas has clearly not been stingy with the standard specification.

Turbocharged performance

Under the bonnet sits a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing 108 kW and 235 Nm of torque.

The engine is paired with a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, sending power to the front wheels.

Around town, the combination feels responsive enough for daily duties, while the engine remains composed on the open road. It is not going to challenge a hot hatch at the traffic lights, thankfully for everyone’s insurance premiums, but there is sufficient performance for overtaking and longer journeys.

Comfort comes first

One of the L4 Pantera’s stronger qualities is its ride comfort.

The suspension does a good job of dealing with uneven road surfaces, absorbing bumps without constantly reminding occupants about the condition of South African roads.

The overall driving experience is relaxed and composed, making the L4 easy to live with whether tackling the daily commute or heading away for the weekend.

Final thoughts

The Lepas L4 Pantera enters a fiercely competitive segment, but it has several things working in its favour.

It looks distinctive, comes generously equipped and offers a comfortable driving experience. The interior also feels more premium than expected at this price point.

It may not be the most powerful or established SUV in its class, but the L4 Pantera’s appeal lies in the overall package. For R419,000, buyers get a modern turbocharged SUV with plenty of technology and comfort features as standard.

In a market where buyers increasingly want more for their money, the Lepas L4 Pantera could prove to be an interesting new alternative. The biggest challenge may simply be convincing South Africans to look beyond the familiar badges already dominating the segment.
