There has been a noticeable influx of hybrids and plug-in hybrids entering the South African market recently, and it is not difficult to see why. With fuel prices remaining a concern for many motorists and some buyers still hesitant to commit to a fully electric vehicle, plug-in hybrids offer an appealing middle ground.
They allow owners to drive on electricity for daily commuting while retaining a petrol engine for longer journeys. For those worried about charging infrastructure or range anxiety, it is arguably the best of both worlds.
At R799,900, the BYD Sealion 6 Premium DM-i AWD aims to be one of the most convincing examples of that formula.
The Sealion 6 is a handsome SUV that avoids over-the-top styling. It features clean lines, slim LED lighting signatures, and a modern design that should age well. While some rivals are more attention-grabbing, the BYD’s understated approach gives it a mature and upmarket feel.

The cabin is one of the Sealion 6’s biggest strengths. Material quality is impressive, and the overall design feels modern and well thought out. Equipment levels are generous, with highlights including a 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen infotainment system, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, heated and ventilated front seats, and a 360-degree camera system. Space is another strong point. Rear-seat passengers have plenty of room, while the boot offers enough practicality for family duties and weekend getaways.
The Premium DM-i AWD combines a turbocharged petrol engine with electric motors to produce a healthy 238kW and 550Nm. Performance is strong, with instant electric torque making everyday driving effortless. Around town, the Sealion 6 often operates in electric mode, creating a quiet and refined driving experience. On longer journeys, the petrol engine steps in seamlessly, removing concerns about charging availability.

Ride quality is generally comfortable and well suited to long-distance travel. During our time with the vehicle, we recorded an average fuel consumption figure of 6.4L/100km. While that is slightly higher than BYD’s claimed 5.8L/100km, it remains an impressive result for a family SUV with this level of performance.
The Sealion 6 isn’t perfect. The steering lacks feedback, the infotainment system can occasionally require too much menu navigation, and under hard acceleration the petrol engine becomes more noticeable than expected.
Verdict
The BYD Sealion 6 Premium DM-i AWD shows just how far plug-in hybrid technology has come.
It offers strong performance, impressive efficiency, generous equipment levels, and enough electric driving capability to significantly reduce fuel consumption during daily use. More importantly, it delivers the benefits of electric motoring without the anxiety that still comes with owning a fully electric vehicle.
At R799,900, the Sealion 6 presents a compelling package. It may not be perfect, but it gets the fundamentals right and deserves serious consideration from anyone shopping for a modern family SUV.
