MINI has always done things its own way. Over the years the brand has grown up, added tech, grown in size and broadened its lineup, but it has never quite lost that unmistakable MINI personality. You know it when you see it. You usually know it when you drive it too. The Aceman SE is the latest chapter in that story and also an important one. It is MINI’s first all-electric compact crossover SUV, and yes, it is built in China. Times change.
The bigger question is whether it still feels like a MINI. After spending time with the Aceman SE, the answer is mostly yes, with a few caveats.
Styling
The Aceman does not look like a traditional MINI, and that is intentional. The design is more blocky and upright, with a lower stance than you might expect from a crossover. The headlights are a particular talking point. They move away from the classic round look and give the Aceman its own identity. It will divide opinion, but we like the fact that MINI did not play it safe.
Despite its crossover billing, the Aceman looks relatively low and planted. It has a compact footprint and a tidy profile, and while it does not scream SUV, it also does not pretend to be something it is not. Overall, it is quirky, modern and unmistakably MINI, just viewed through an electric lens.
Interior: Peak MINI personality
Inside is where the Aceman really leans into its character. The cabin is packed with design flair and modern tech, anchored by the central circular OLED display. This screen houses MINI’s latest infotainment system and serves as the focal point of the interior. It looks fantastic, it is quick to respond and it supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The seats are supportive and provide a good driving position, making it easy to get comfortable behind the wheel. Material quality feels solid, and the overall vibe is playful without feeling cheap.
That said, practicality is not its strongest suit. Boot space measures just 300 litres, which is on the small side for a vehicle in this segment. The infotainment system, while impressive, relies heavily on touch inputs and sub menus. If you prefer physical buttons for things like air conditioning, you may find yourself wishing MINI had kept a few more knobs around.
On the road
Powering the Aceman SE is an electric motor producing 160 kW and 330 Nm. It will sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in a claimed 7.1 seconds. It is not neck-snapping fast, but it feels brisk enough, especially around town where instant power and torque does most of the work. While MINI claims 380 km of range, we managed a respectable 355 km on a single charge.
The ride is generally comfortable, though it does lean toward the firmer side, particularly on rougher surfaces. That firmness, however, plays into the Aceman’s handling. It still delivers that familiar MINI go-kart feel, with direct steering and a willingness to change direction that makes it genuinely fun to drive.
There is a point, though, where the crossover reality sets in. Push harder and you are reminded that this is not a low-slung hatchback, but a taller, heavier vehicle. Still, for everyday driving, it strikes a good balance between comfort and character.

Conclusion
The MINI Aceman SE is an intriguing addition to the brand’s lineup. It looks different, feels modern and delivers enough driving fun to remind you where it comes from. It is not the most practical electric crossover out there, and the reliance on touch controls will not suit everyone, but it has charm in spades.
For buyers looking for something a little left of centre in the EV space, the Aceman SE makes a compelling case. It may be built in China, but the personality is still very much MINI. Quirky, engaging and just unconventional enough to stand out. The MINI Aceman SE kicks off at R892,000.
