BMW 740i Design Pure Excellence review

Regality at its finest
Regality at its finest

The BMW 7 Series has always been the brand’s flagship sedan, a showcase of what Munich can do when it pulls out all the stops. Since its debut in 1977, the 7 has mixed luxury, innovation and performance, often setting the tone for future BMW models. Now in its seventh generation, it is bolder than ever.

The design may split opinion. Some will say the grille is too big, others might argue the details are over the top, but one thing is certain: it stands out. In a segment filled with sleek and understated sedans, the 740i refuses to blend in, and we like that.

Inside the lounge on wheels

Open the door and you are greeted by a sea of luxury. Materials feel rich, the lighting adds theatre, and the technology borders on outrageous. We spent most of our time behind the wheel, but the rear seat experience deserves a mention. Fold down the 31-inch 8K Theatre Screen and suddenly the back becomes a private cinema. Activate Theatre Mode and the blinds close automatically while the Bowers & Wilkins sound system takes over. You may find yourself sitting in the driveway longer than necessary, just to finish a scene.

Power and performance

Under the bonnet lies BMW’s familiar B58 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six, now assisted by mild hybrid technology. It produces 280 kW and 540 Nm, more than enough to move this 2.1-tonne saloon with ease. The power delivery is smooth and composed, perfectly matched to the character of the car. BMW claims 7.9 L/100 km, though we averaged 8.9 L/100 km in real-world driving. That is respectable for something this large and heavy.

Comfort that makes time disappear

The ride quality is where the 740i really shines. Adaptive two-axle air suspension with automatic self-levelling ensures it glides over roads, even the broken ones, while keeping things stable. Combine that with the balanced nature of the B58 engine and serious soundproofing, and you get a car that turns long drives into relaxing escapes.

Final thoughts

It is impossible to review the 7 Series without mentioning the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The S-Class has long been considered the gold standard in luxury sedans, but the 740i fights back with a different approach. The Mercedes is like a five-star lounge. The BMW feels more like a tech-laden penthouse suite with a cinema room. Both are brilliant, but the BMW has more personality and flair.

At a starting price of R2,284,104, the 740i sits firmly in premium territory, and for that money you expect a lot. The good news is that it delivers. At a time when SUVs dominate the roads, cars like the 740i remind us why big luxury sedans still matter. It is bold, comfortable and rewarding in a way only a flagship saloon can be.
