The new BMW 5 Series was unveiled in May last year, and we recently got behind the wheel of the newly designed Beemer. Now in its eighth generation, the newcomer ushers in a host of advancements, including a fully-electric model, BMW’s latest design philosophy, ground-breaking technologies, heightened levels of luxury using sustainable materials, and advanced driver assistance systems. We recently sampled the BMW 520d, which stands out as the most frugal and arguably the most impressive car we’ve driven in 2024.
New design
In terms of design, the eighth-generation 5 Series boasts a modern and athletic exterior look. Our tester came finished in Black Sapphire Metallic, sporting 20-inch multicolour Titanium Bronze wheels and optional BMW Individual Exterieur Line Titanium Bronze. The latter elevates the new 5 Series classy appeal. The 520d comes standard with the M Sport package, LED headlights and taillights. For those seeking added flair, BMW offers the optional M Sport Package Pro with a Carbon exterior package.
Updated interior
The interior of the new 5 Series has undergone a significant update, featuring BMW’s signature curved display, which incorporates a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen running the latest Operating System 8.5. The displays are crisp and responsive, further enhancing the driver-focused cabin.

Full vegan leather upholstery is standard, and the redesigned multifunction steering wheel adds a touch of sophistication. The cabin provides ample head and legroom for all passengers, cocooning occupants in a premium environment with soft-touch materials throughout. It’s an exceptional space to spend time in, with plenty of customization options available to suit individual tastes.
BMW has truly outdone itself in terms of luxury, and the 520d’s cabin feels both futuristic and highly functional. The attention to detail ensures a serene and comfortable journey for driver and passengers alike.
Frugal diesel engine
The 520d is powered by a 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine, producing 145 kW and 400 Nm of torque. It features 48-volt mild-hybrid technology, which not only enhances acceleration but also boosts efficiency. This engine is a gem: incredibly smooth, responsive, and we were able to achieve fuel consumption figures as low as 4.6 L/100km. With over 1000 km possible on a single tank, the 520d is an economical choice that doesn’t compromise on performance.
Safety
The BMW 5 Series doesn’t skimp on safety, offering a comprehensive suite of advanced driving and parking assistance systems. Standard features include Driving Assistant Professional, which adds Steering and Lane Control Assist with Distance Control and Stop & Go functionality. Parking Assistant, with Reversing Assist, comes standard, while the optional Parking Assistant Professional enables automated parking and manoeuvring up to 200 meters, which can even be controlled remotely via a smartphone.

Verdict
The new BMW 520d blends fuel efficiency, cutting-edge technology, and unparalleled luxury. While the new design may spark debate among traditionalists, the advancements beneath the surface make it a formidable contender in the luxury sedan segment. Against rivals like the Audi A6 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class (which we are yet to drive), the 520d stands tall as the most impressive car we’ve driven in 2024. If you value frugality, sophistication, and a driving experience that’s hard to beat, the BMW 520d deserves your attention. The BMW 520d starts from R1,248,731
