Launched in 2018, the Isuzu mu-X entered the South African market to shake things up in the 7-seater SUV segment. A few years later, the Japanese automaker introduced a new model with a sharper design, packed with the latest features to directly compete with the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Everest. With that said, meet the refreshed Isuzu mu-X in its top-spec Onyx 4×4 guise.
Design
In terms of design, we like the look of the mu-X. It might not appeal to everyone, but it certainly stands out among its competitors. The updated 7-seater SUV features a slightly redesigned front grille finished in Magnetite and Black Chrome, newly designed 20-inch wheels, Magnetite roof rails, Magnetite side steps, rear LED combination lamps, a hands-free power tailgate, and a new Norwegian Blue body color, which replaces the rather meh Santos Brown. The updates, though subtle, enhance the already bold looks. That said, the pre-facelift model still looks impressive in our eyes.
Interior
Changes inside the updated mu-X are minimal. These include Dark Magnetite accents on the dashboard and door panels, as well as 8-way power-adjustable leather seats. The cabin is a pleasant place to be, combining soft materials with high-quality plastics. Unfortunately, the mu-X falls into the category of vehicles with gloss-black finishes, which are prone to scratches and attract dust, though this is unlikely to be a deal-breaker for most.

The mu-X comes with a 9-inch infotainment screen that supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Be aware that the system can take some time to boot up Apple CarPlay, which could be frustrating if you’re in a hurry.
Space-wise, the mu-X is quite generous. With the third-row seats up, you get 311 liters of boot space, expanding to 1,119 liters with them folded. With both the second and third rows folded, the boot capacity increases to 2,138 liters. For added practicality, the second row has its own air-conditioning controls, which also manage the third row. Speaking of the third row, it’s suitable for short trips for adults but more comfortable for children.
Powertrain
The mu-X is powered by a robust 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel four-cylinder engine producing 140kW and 450Nm, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. It has a claimed fuel consumption of 7.6L/100km, and during our test, we achieved 9.5L/100km, which is commendable for such a large vehicle. For those seeking a more fuel-efficient option, Isuzu also offers the mu-X with a 1.9 Ddi engine. In terms of driving, the large SUV is comfortable, moves swiftly under load, and navigates urban areas with ease.

Off-road capabilities include a 4×4 system with off-road mode and a locking rear differential. While we didn’t take the mu-X off-road, we know the Japanese-made SUV is highly capable, thanks to its high ride height and excellent approach/departure angles.
Safety
The mu-X comes with a comprehensive suite of driver aids, including Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with Traction Control, ABS with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist System (BAS), Brake Override Accelerator (BOA), Hill Start Assist (HAS), Hill Descent Control (HDC), Trailer Sway Control, and Cruise Control. It also features front and rear parking sensors, along with a rear-view camera.
For passive safety, the mu-X offers driver and front passenger airbags, front seat side airbags, curtain airbags, and a driver’s knee airbag. Remote central locking is combined with a factory-installed anti-theft alarm system, a transponder immobiliser, and selectable door unlocking for added security. The top-spec Onyx also includes the brand’s Intelligent Driver Assistance Systems (IDAS), which feature lane keep assist, steering assist, and a blind spot monitor to aid long-distance driving.
Summary
The Isuzu mu-X Onyx competes in a tough market but holds its own. We confidently say it surpasses the Toyota Fortuner in terms of cabin quality and feel, though it does fall behind the new Everest, which leads the segment in cabin design and styling. At R978,200, the mu-X offers bold styling, a comfortable cabin and ride, and, most importantly, the trusted reliability of Isuzu. While the Ford Everest may boast a more modern design and advanced tech, you’re likely to keep the Isuzu mu-X for longer.
