Driven: Volvo C40 Recharge

Volvo hit the nail on the head with this one.
Volvo hit the nail on the head with this one.

The Volvo C40 Recharge represents Volvo’s commitment to electrification. The C40 joins the Volvo XC40 Recharge line-up, featuring the brand’s distinctive EV design and styling, innovative technology, and a high-performance battery pack.

In true Volvo fashion, the C40 Recharge unmistakably carries the brand’s design DNA, drawing inspiration from other Volvo models like its XC40 sibling. The coupe-like silhouette not only exudes sleekness but also serves a purpose by minimizing drag. Our tester was finished in Vapour Grey (very similar to Audi’s Nardo Grey) and noteworthy features include intelligent Pixel LED headlights featuring the iconic ‘Thor’s Hammer’ daytime running lights, a closed-off grille, a spacious ‘frunk’ with 31 liters of storage, imposing 20-inch wheels, a gracefully sloping rear roofline, an integrated rear spoiler, and LED taillights with captivating dynamic turn signals.

We find ourselves enamored with the C40 Recharge’s design and styling, which strikes a balance between elegance and sportiness. While the sloping roofline adds style, it comes at the cost of compromising rear visibility.

In line with Volvo’s contemporary design ethos, the interior of the C40 Recharge boasts a luxurious and modern cabin characterized by a minimalist approach, featuring distinctive leather-free upholstery. Our test unit showcased the simple yet elegant Charcoal Connect Suede textile/Microtech in Charcoal interior. Notable features in the C40 Recharge include partially recycled carpets, subtly illuminated translucent decor, a standard fixed panoramic roof that adds ambiance to the cabin, an impressive Harman Kardon sound system, cleverly designed storage solutions, and a vertically oriented touchscreen display hosting an intuitive Android-based infotainment system known as Google Automotive Services. This system seamlessly integrates with Google Maps and Google Assistant, among other functionalities. The C40 does come with Apple CarPlay, but unlike some of its competitors it is wired rather than wireless which is slightly disappointing. Stepping into the cabin during our stint, we consistently found ourselves enveloped in a comfortable and surprisingly spacious modern interior.

Powering the Volvo C40 Recharge are electric motors strategically placed at the front and rear axles, coupled with a 78kWh lithium-ion battery pack that produces an impressive 300kW and 660Nm of torque. Volvo boldly claims a noteworthy range of 444km, coupled with a commendable 0-100km/h sprint time of just 4.7 seconds. A brief acceleration from a standstill had us affirming that the C40 Recharge P8 is quick and feels quicker than the claimed 0 – 100 km/h sprint time. During our test period, we did nearly 400 km on a single charge, which is not too far off the claimed range figure.

Similar to its XC40 Recharge sibling, once you step into the C40 Recharge, the traditional quest for a start/stop button becomes futile – it’s simply not there. The initiation process is refreshingly straightforward: ensure the key fob is within range, depress the brake pedal, and engage the reverse or drive gear and you’re good to go. It’s one process that’s quite easy, but the mind sometimes wants to reach for a start/stop button.

The C40 Recharge offers a comfortable and quiet driving experience. Embracing the one-pedal-driving concept, adapting to regenerative braking proved swift, rendering the brake pedal almost redundant, particularly in urban settings. Notably, it boasts an impressive range of approximately 330km at an 80% charge. According to Volvo, utilizing a fast charger for the 10 – 80% charge window requires just a mere 37 minutes. Overall, the driving experience in the C40 was a pleasant one.

The C40’s stylish and contemporary coupe-like design offers a unique aesthetic for those who value a more modern and distinctive appearance. Ultimately, the C40 shows Volvo’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and delivering a premium driving experience in the electric vehicle segment.
