We take a spin in the Jaguar I-PACE BLACK EV400.

The Jaguar I-Pace is still a treat.
The Jaguar I-Pace is still a treat.

Adjusting to change can feel like a big leap, especially when it comes to the unknown. Yet, the Jaguar I-PACE makes this transition feel like a breeze, seamlessly bringing the future into a familiar package. Unlike some electric cars that shout about being electric, the I-PACE keeps things low-key, making the shift to electric vehicles less intimidating.

The design of the I-PACE is a treat for the eyes, finding a sweet spot between modernity and the familiar, even though this updated version looks much like the pre-facelift model. Its subtle electric touches add to its good looks, making it a smart choice for those thinking about going electric. The interior, in keeping with Jaguar’s rep for excellence, is top-notch. It’s a well-crafted space with ample room for both front and rear passengers. Charging points and cup holders are cleverly placed, making the overall experience great – and did I mention the seats are probably some of the comfiest in a modern car?

Getting used to life with the I-Pace is a smooth ride, thanks to its robust 90kWh battery and electric motors churning out 294 kW and 696 Nm. The impressive 0-100 km/h sprint time of 4.8 seconds is made possible by its all-wheel-drive system. While it claims a range of 470 km, the real-world performance depends on your driving habits and how much you use features like air conditioning and heated seats/steering. In our time with the I-PACE, we hit a range of just over 400 km, giving us confidence in its practicality, even with the current limited charging station setup.

Living with the I-PACE is mostly hassle-free, but the challenge of finding effective charging points is an industry-wide issue, not a flaw with the car itself. Despite this, the I-Pace shines in most areas. It drives well, has cool tech features, and offers comfort that rivals even pricier cars, especially in terms of quality and luxury vibes. Driving the Jaguar is a pleasure, with features like radar-guided cruise control, lane-keep assist, and a high-res 360-degree camera boosting the driving experience. The cabin’s quietness, paired with the crystal-clear Meridian sound system, takes the comfort level up a notch. The air suspension handles bumps gracefully and keeps things stable around corners.

To sum it up, the Jaguar I-PACE smoothly merges tradition with the future, delivering a well-executed package. The overall experience is captivating, making a strong case for electric cars while holding onto the spirited essence of petrol-driven vehicles in this new energy form. The pricing for our test I-PACE BLACK EV400 starts from R2,168,160. The I-PACE is a testament to Jaguar’s commitment to innovation and excellence in the electric vehicle world. It’s a unique offering in every way.
