The Range Rover has been known for being a gas guzzler, but now with new engines and electric motors introduced things might just change.

Land Rover SA has taken the engine out of the defender and is now available on the Range Rover Sport as well. This is great news as this engine includes an electric motor making it a mild hybrid, and we know that that combination these days has many benefits.

The engine itself is a 3-litre straight-six petrol engine and the two Ranger Rover Sport models that will have this engine is the P360 and P400 HST. The P360 has a power output of 265kW and 495N.m and can accelerate to 100kph in 6.6 seconds, the P400 has 294kW and 550N.m and gets to 100kph in 5.9 seconds.

What’s new about this engine? Well, it has a new twin-scroll turbocharger and an electric supercharger to eliminate turbo lag on pull-off. The 48V battery drives the compressor of the car and can harvest energy when the vehicle is decelerating and store it in the 48V battery.

The new HST model features a unique combination of interior and exterior updates including bespoke badging and carbon fibre trim on the bonnet, front grille, side vents and tailgate. There are also 5 colours to choose from, Santorini Black, Fuji White, Hakuba Silver, Firenze Red and Carpathian Grey – and customers can choose between two alloy wheel designs.

The Range Rover Sport P360 and HST are available in South Africa now, priced from R1,369,000 and R1,874,600 respectively.
