Launched back in 2011, the Audi Q3 was immediate hit in the crossover market. Fast forward 8 years later, we see the brand new model continue with it’s beautiful looks and practicality.

Styling

The new Q3 boasts a sportier look than its predecessor. A chunky single frame grille up front with new LED matrix headlamps (optional extra). There’s no mistaking the Q3 with its larger siblings. Our test unit was fitted with the optional 19-inch 5 arm wheels, coupled with quite a unique metallic paint called Cosmo Blue. The Q3 has some sporty lines as well as an aggressive off-road look. It’s a really smart looking car.

Inside

The Q3’s interior is very up to date, all models now come standard with a digital instrument cluster, and touch display. Customers can opt for the Technology package which includes a bigger 10.1 inch touch display and a bigger 12.3 inch virtual cockpit which will set you back R33 000,500. Audi’s MMI Infotainment is pretty easy to use, it includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The car roomy, though it has a slightly lower roof line than the previous generation Q3, head room is quite good. It’s quite practical, the door bins are quite large, if you don’t have a space saver in the boot you increase boot space by dropping the false floor. It has plenty of storage spaces.

The Drive

Audi has confused many people with the new naming system and will take some time getting used to. The Q3 35 TFSI is powered by a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine which is also found in the previous gen Q3. Power is sent to the front wheels via a six-speed S-Tronic transmission. The transmissions main down-fall is its tendency to hold gears at time. The ride quality is compliant, its not bad nor good, just compliant. In terms of handing, it does a very good job, seeing as most owners will in and out of traffic, it maneuvers pretty well thanks to its sharp handling. Audi claims fuel consumption at 5.9 l/100 km, we got pretty close averaging just 6.2 l/100 km.

Verdict

The new Q3 starts at R 578,000 with our test unit coming in at R748,050 with options. The Q3 is a premium car, offers great looks and a well finished interior. That being said, the price is a bit steep for what is, after all it is a family crossover.
