The Volkswagen Tiguan has long been a favourite among South African families looking for a practical yet stylish SUV. With this latest model, VW aims to keep its midsize SUV fresh and competitive in a packed segment. The VW Tiguan 1.4 TSI R-Line model, with its sporty looks and solid features, is set to turn heads. But does it have what it takes to stand out?
Exterior
In Persimmon Red Metallic, our tester looks like it’s dressed for the red carpet at Sun City. The R-Line includes aggressive front and rear bumpers, side skirts, and 20-inch Leeds alloy wheels that lend it a premium edge. The LED headlights and taillights now boast sharper designs, while the optional panoramic sunroof adds ambiance to the cabin. The new Tiguan is subtle but effective, keeping it modern without veering into over-the-top territory.

Interior
Inside, the Tiguan R-Line offers a mix of style and functionality. The cabin is dominated by soft-touch materials, glossy black finishes, and an intuitive layout. The digital cockpit display and an 12.9-inch infotainment system (upgradable to 15-inches) offer crisp graphics and easy connectivity via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Practicality remains a highlight. With the rear seats down, you get a massive 1,650 liters of luggage space, perfect for family road trips or a quick trip to Builders Warehouse. The optional “Easy Open & Close” electric tailgate and keyless entry simplify loading and unloading.
Engine
The Tiguan R-Line is powered by a 1.4-liter turbocharged petrol engine producing 110 kW and 250 Nm of torque, paired with a 7-speed DSG transmission. It’s not built for drag races (0–100 km/h takes 9.2 seconds), but it delivers smooth acceleration and feels well-suited for urban driving and highway cruising.
Handling is composed, thanks to VW’s balanced suspension setup, but don’t expect it to feel sporty despite its looks. The adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist, part of the optional R-Line Plus Package, make long-distance driving a breeze. The fuel economy, we saw ourselves hovering around 9.4 L/100 km (VW claims 7.6 L/100 km), is reasonable but not ground-breaking for the segment. Also, if you’re looking for something less thirsty. the Tiguan can be opted with a 110 kW 2,0 TDI motor. Despite the sporty R-Line branding, the engine feels underwhelming for a car that looks this aggressive. For those needing more oomph, VW will start offering the 2.0 TSI 140kW DSG from next year.

Verdict
The new Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line offers plenty of style, practicality, and comfort for South African families. However, its modest engine performance and escalating price might steer buyers toward other models it competes. Chinese brands like Haval and Chery also pose a growing threat, offering high-tech features and competitive performance at a fraction of the price. While the Tiguan remains a premium choice, it faces stiff competition in a market driven by affordability and value.
If you’re after a family-friendly SUV with a premium edge and don’t mind the occasional splurge on extras, the Tiguan R-Line remains a classy and capable choice. Pricing for the VW Tiguan 1.4 TSI R-Line starts from R781,600.
