The Leapmotor C10 REEV is one of the more interesting new-energy vehicles to arrive in South Africa. It offers many of the benefits of driving an EV, but without the range anxiety that still prevents many buyers from making the switch. In a country where charging infrastructure remains inconsistent, that alone makes it a compelling prospect.
Unlike a conventional hybrid, the C10 REEV is always driven by its electric motor, which produces 158kW and 320Nm. The 1.5-litre petrol engine never powers the wheels directly and instead acts as a generator, charging the battery when required. The result is an EV-like driving experience with smooth power delivery and instant torque whenever you put your foot down.
Around town, the C10 is at its best. It’s quiet, refined and effortless to drive, with enough performance to make everyday commuting feel easy. The ride quality leans towards comfort rather than outright sportiness, soaking up imperfections well and making it a pleasant SUV to spend time in. On the open road, it remains composed and stable, although once the battery charge drops and the petrol generator starts working harder, the cabin does become noticeably noisier than when operating primarily on battery power. It’s not a deal-breaker, but it does remind you that there’s still a combustion engine working away in the background.

Inside, the cabin adopts a minimalist approach that won’t be to everyone’s liking. Almost everything is controlled through the large central touchscreen, while physical buttons are kept to a minimum. The card-based key system also takes some getting used to. That said, the interior feels modern and spacious, with generous rear-seat accommodation and enough practicality to satisfy most family buyers.
Efficiency is where the C10 REEV really starts to make sense. The 28.4kWh battery provides enough electric range to cover the average daily commute, while the petrol generator extends the overall range to close to 1,000km on a full charge and tank. If you’re diligent about charging, fuel stops could become a rare occurrence. Even when relying more heavily on the generator, consumption figures of around 6.0 to 8.0L/100km are achievable depending on driving conditions and your right foot.
Safety and convenience features are comprehensive, with adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, multiple airbags and various parking aids included as standard. Buyers in this segment expect technology, and the C10 certainly doesn’t arrive short on features.

At R799,900 for the Design derivative, the C10 REEV occupies an interesting position in the market. It’s not cheap, but when you consider the technology on offer and the ability to enjoy electric motoring without constantly planning your life around charging stations, it begins to make a lot of sense.
Verdict
The Leapmotor C10 REEV feels like a sensible stepping stone between traditional combustion vehicles and full EVs. It delivers the smoothness and refinement of an electric vehicle while removing much of the anxiety associated with long-distance travel. It isn’t perfect, and the generator can become noticeable when battery levels are low, but as an everyday family SUV that embraces electrification without demanding compromises, the C10 REEV makes a strong case for itself.
